Fairy Party Ideas

Fairies love to have fun, and birthdays are no exception. Put your fairy imagination to work creating a little magic in your party. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Lights! Nothing says party like lights, and nothing says fairy like fairy lights! Why else would they call them that? If you're planning way ahead, you can get lots of basic white string lights after Christmas for cheap! But they're not expensive any time of year, so go ahead and invest in some fairy brightness! If you'll be using them outdoors, make sure they have the proper rating. And wherever you use them, make sure the cords are safely out of the way of little fairy feet.

Gossamer and netting are fun fairy fabrics to use in decorating for your fairy party. Get an expandable curtain rod that will fit in a doorway, and drape a length of fabric over the rod so it is floor-length on both sides when doubled over the rod. You can make a pocket for the rod, like a standard curtain, to keep it from sliding off the rod. If you don't sew, use fabric glue, staples, double-sided tape, whatever works. You can add ribbons, flowers, glitter glue, etc. to the seam and/or the length of curtain. Leave the panel whole, split it in two, or cut it in wide strips top to bottom. Hemming isn't necessary, it's just a temporary entryway decoration. Make it fun, make it colorful, make it fast, and get on to the fairy party food!

Start with the cake. You can do a big cake or individual cupcakes. Whichever you choose, add edible sparklies and pretty little candles to top it off. You can make fairy wands of stick pretzels, with the tips dipped in frosting and rolled in edible sparklies. If the frosting is too soft, try adding a little confectioner's sugar. Experiment a little to get it just right so it isn't too messy for your party guests. Make dainty little sandwiches with the crusts removed and whatever fillings you like.

Entertainment will depend on the age of the party guests, and can be games, movies, or crafts. A fairy dress-up relay race might be fun. Crafts might include making a fairy wand, wings, tutu, hair decoration, a fairy pouch, or decorating an old pair of shoes (each guest brings her own.) Or maybe making pretty necklaces would be fun. Always have more entertainment planned than you think you will have time for. Sometimes things go more quickly than expected! (Keep your receipts so you can return any unneeded craft items.)

You'll want to give your guests some party favors, perhaps sparkly nail polish in a couple of fairy shades, and a pretty little mirror in a cute little cosmetic bag. Or some fairy wings. Dollar stores often have clear batons with floating glitter in them. Anything fun, sparkly, and age-appropriate.
