If this is a 1st birthday celebration, cupcakes are better than cake, because they're so easy for little ones to hold and eat. So make the cupcakes and decorate them yourself. If the cupcake birthday is for an older child, consider baking the cupcakes and letting the party guests decorate their own! If they're very young, you may want to add the frosting and let the kids add toppings such as sprinkles. Otherwise, set everything out and let them have fun!

Here are some ideas for cupcake party activities:
Cupcake walk - Similar to musical chairs. Cut a sheet of paper into 4 or 6 pieces. Starting with 1, put a number on each sheet. Continue with another sheet of paper until you have enough for the number of guests. When it's time for the game, tape the numbers in a circle on the floor, and have a child stand next to each number. Write the same numbers on slips of paper and put them in a bowl, hat or basket. Start the music. The kids go around until the music stops. Draw a number, and the child who stopped by that number gets a prize, and is removed from the game. Continue until everyone wins and gets a prize.
Pin the candle on the cupcake - You can order the game, already made, through the party links above, or make your own from poster board, construction paper, and paint or markers. You'll need a bandana or scarf for a blindfold, and tape to attach the candles to the cake. Have one prize for the person who gets the closest to the top center of the cupcake, or have prizes for each person. You may want to write each child's name on their candle so you know whose was whose!
Decorating the cupcakes - As mentioned above, older kids have fun decorating their own cupcakes. You may want to have other activities first, then allow time towards the end of the party for decorating and eating the cupcakes. If you do this activity earlier, have some active games to do after, to help the children burn off any extra sugar energy! If this is an outdoor party, it doesn't have to be structured activity; you can just provide some toys for imaginative play.
Pinata - Kids of all ages love pinatas! There are regular pinatas, and also pull-string pinatas for younger kids. The ones linked in the party supplies section above are pull-string, but can be used with a pinata buster (stick) which is also available in the same location. Fun for everyone!
